The International Trademark Association (INTA)

Rob Lucas, Head of Intellectual Property at Shulmans, sits on INTA’s Parallel Imports Sub-Committee and participates in committee meetings aimed at shaping the approach to parallel imports in various European countries.

Rob has also been appointed to INTA’s Panel of Trademark Mediators and is the only mediator to secure this appointment in the North of the UK.

Founded in 1878, the International Trademark Association (INTA) is a global not-for-profit organisation of trademark owners and professionals, dedicated to supporting trademarks and related intellectual property.

The association seeks to:

  • Protect consumers
  • Promote fair and effective commerce
  • Protect and promote the rights of trademark owners
  • Secure useful legislation
  • Give aid and encouragement to all efforts for the advancement and observance of trademark rights

INTA undertakes advocacy work throughout the world to advance trademarks, and offers educational programs and informational/legal resources of global interest.

INTA counts as members more than 6,700 organizations from 190 countries. It represents some 30,000 trademark professionals and includes brand owners from major corporations, small- and medium-sized enterprises, law firms and non-profits. There are also government agency members as well as individual professors and students.

Headquartered in New York City, INTA also has offices in Brussels, Shanghai and Washington D.C., and representatives in Geneva and New Delhi.

Rob Lucas, Shulmans’ Head of Intellectual Property, attended the association’s 139th annual meeting in Barcelona, from 20 to 24 May 2017 inclusive. Attending this conference underlines the commitment that Rob and the Shulmans IP team take to intellectual property, and to assisting our clients in all matters relating to trademarks, patents, copyright and design rights, both in the UK and overseas.

Much of the IP team’s work has an international aspect, whether it is advising clients on their IP portfolios overseas or managing enforcement action in one or more overseas jurisdictions, and can include:

  • Brand management
  • IP clearance checks
  • IP enforcement action
  • Portfolio and contract management

In addition, we can help protect your business against the ever-increasing risk of fraud, both nationally and internationally, and the use and misuse of data. We have experience of identifying and taking action to stop frauds taking place, which has included obtaining emergency search and seizure orders against those acting against our clients’ interests or who have unlawfully taken data.

We can also assist if you are looking to establish a business presence in the UK or to operate overseas. We are long-standing members of Interlegal, one of the longest-established and most experienced international legal networks, which is made up of independent commercial law firms in over 35 countries.
