Head of Construction

Dually qualified in English and Scottish law, Head of Construction Phil Morrison has over 25 years’ experience working with large private and public sector bodies to deliver infrastructure projects and to maintain their property portfolios. This involves both contentious and non-contentious matters.

Clients praise Phil for his “very impressive technical knowledge within the construction sector”. They describe him as being “highly organised and acutely aware of deadlines” and “professional and dependable at all times”. The latest edition of Chambers & Partners recognises Phil as a 'noted practitioner'.

In contentious matters, Phil’s expertise lies in the following:

  • Adjudications;
  • High Court and County Court proceedings (including TCC);
  • Alternative Dispute Resolution (including mediation, expert determination and structured negotiation);
  • Arbitration and residential building disputes;
  • Third party rights advice: and
  • Renewables, including wind, commercial solar and battery storage.

In non-contentious matters, Phil’s particular expertise is in providing strategic advice on greenfield and brownfield sites and working closely with organisations and other professional advisers to devise and deliver strategies for development.

Phil can provide advice on standard industry contracts (JCT, NEC, FIDIC, IchemE, PFI), including drafting building contracts, professional team appointments, collateral warranties, bonds and guarantees; he also provides advice on energy and renewable energy contracts.

Amongst Phil’s recent projects include:

  • Advising on a complicated technical claim involving a large London development;

  • Providing advice and construction documentation to a developer in relation to a multi-million pound development project in York city centre;

  • Advising a sub-contractor on the contractual documentation required for a substantial groundworks project, and acting for the client in a dispute relating to non-payment for works.

Phil regularly runs seminars for the RICS and at our offices; he also offers bespoke training sessions in popular topics in construction.

Phil is a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and sits on the North East committee. He is also a member of the Society for Construction Law.
