Head of International
Corporate & Commercial
The founder of the firm, Jeremy is Shulmans' Senior Partner and one of Leeds’ most recognisable lawyers. He has been described as “one of the best-known personalities in Yorkshire” and is one of its leading business figures.
Jeremy has overseen Shulmans’ expansion into one of Leeds' top corporate law firms. He was the first solicitor to become a licensed insolvency practitioner in the country, and Shulmans owned the first LLP on the Register.
Jeremy is a specialist in corporate finance and complex employment matters. Jeremy is trusted to find effective solutions in some of the most difficult or complex of circumstances, including:
- Partnership and shareholder issues
- International transactions
- High-value private client matters
Jeremy is known for his robust, pragmatic and common-sense approach.
Jeremy’s experience spans corporate, partnership, employment and international law, including:
Excellent experience in handling overseas clients setting up in the UK through his involvement with Interlegal, the international network of law firms, of which he is a former secretary and former president;
Practicing unfair dismissal law since it came into force, right from the start of his training contract. He was a member of the Law Society’s Employment Law Committee, a high-level committee which advises the profession on employment law and consults with the Government on the prospective changes in employment law;
Since 1981, his aim has been negotiated resolution. Only one of his partnership cases has been brought to Court in that time, and not by him.
Clients seek Jeremy’s advice because of his ability to drive a solution without being unduly confrontational and his understanding of the important issues.
Jeremy advises PLCs and SMEs, senior directors on boardroom tussles and clients on general strategic positioning.
Jeremy has led the way in terms of client care, which resulted in Shulmans being the first firm in Leeds to receive the Lexcel accreditation, and one of the first to receive the IIP award. His involvement with organisations such as the Yorkshire Legal Awards (of which he is Joint President) and the Leeds Law Society (former President), whilst holding leading positions in the Law Society nationally, has helped Shulmans be at the forefront of the profession.
Jeremy has also sat as an Employment Judge since 1997. He is currently chairman of the Leeds Business Forum and is an International Export Ambassador for the Leeds City Region.
