Insider Property Leaders’ Forum – “Future proofing the British high street”
Amanda Beresford recently attended a Yorkshire Business Insider Property Leaders’ round table which explored changes in consumer habits and the impact it is having on retailers in cities and town centres.
This is one of four forums which Shulmans is sponsoring this year.
Representatives from the public, private and retail sectors attended the event which aimed to explore the problems of the changing retail market and possible solutions.
Much of the debate was focused around the generational and technological changes that have resulted in the high street’s fading popularity. Changing consumer mind-sets combined with rises in internet shopping and the development of large retail parks have pushed our traditional high streets to breaking point. Amanda raised the planning issue of “getting the right mix in city centres” and the risk of town and city centres not being “the best holistic mix that they can be”. The session ended with a clear consensus that innovation and new ways of thinking were paramount to any long term plans for the future.
