Our Management Structure

Our partners set the overall strategy for the business. The Management Board takes responsibility for its day-to-day activities.

The Management Board is made up of five partners and one non-lawyer. Tim Halstead (Managing Partner) and Richard Wadkin have been members for over twenty years and bring considerable experience and continuity. Rosemary Edwards and Simon Jackson were appointed to the board in 2013. The fifth member is Paul Beales, our Head of Business Support (who is not a lawyer). Marcus Armstrong, who heads our corporate and commercial team, was appointed in 2015.

As Managing Partner, Tim Halstead liaises regularly with the heads of the individual practice areas. We keep the management structure as flat as we can. The Managing Partner is given considerable scope without referring back to the Management Board, so colleagues can get decisions when they need them. This enables the firm to respond quickly to the everyday demands of the business.

Business Support functions are likewise run by individual managers, responsible for IT, accounts, HR, business development and general administration. They all report to Paul Beales, as Head of Business Support services.

The partners meet formally as a group once a quarter to set the overall strategy and direction of the firm. All partners see the monthly Management Board papers and have the chance to offer suggestions. As Tim Halstead says: “We run the business on collegiate lines. Ideas are often floated informally before they reach the Management Board for decision”. Perhaps unusually, all partner appraisals are conducted by the Managing Partner. Tim adds: “That creates a consistency of approach and a direct line to all of the partners. Although it’s time-consuming, everyone agrees that that is one of the most important things that a managing partner can do”.
