Our History

Shulmans LLP was founded in 1981 by Jeremy Shulman, who is now its Senior Partner.

A forward-thinking firm from the start, Shulmans was an early achiever of the Investors in People accreditation, as well as one of the first in the UK to achieve the legal quality standard, Lexcel.

Jeremy set out from the start to build a corporate practice, focusing on the needs of business clients. That remains the firm’s primary market, as it is now recognised as a full service corporate law firm.

Over the decades, the firm has grown steadily and established itself as one of the region’s market leaders. Shulmans has never merged with another firm, preferring instead to grow its own talent and recruit selectively in strategic areas. Several of the current partners started as trainees. Many partners and other colleagues have been with the firm for twenty years or more.

Shulmans became a partnership in 1985 when the present Managing Partner, Tim Halstead, joined Jeremy Shulman in partnership. In 2010, the firm became an LLP.

Shulmans started on the ground floor of 21 York Place, Leeds, eventually taking all three, then a mezzanine area and basement, before (literally) breaking through to take the buildings on either side. After thirteen years at 120 Wellington Street, the firm moved in 2014 to its present location across the road at 10 Wellington Place, in the heart of the new business district of Leeds.

The firm has been part of the regional business community since it was founded, with three former Presidents of the Leeds Law Society. Many members of the firm hold positions as trustees of charities or similar.
