Paul Forster, associate corporate finance
“I feel that I have a role in a team that is growing”
After working as an in-house lawyer for two large companies I was missing the transactional work, practice management and business development involved in being a corporate finance solicitor in a legal firm.
However, I wanted to work for a medium-sized firm based solely in Leeds - not one where the power base, decision making and main corporate partners were based in, say, a Manchester or London office. I also only applied to firms where I considered I would get on with people and I liked and respected Andrew Bradley from when I worked opposite him on a transaction while in private practice between 1997-2004.
At Shulmans I could see the potential route to partnership and it was also the right market for my contacts in Leeds. Also, I liked the fact that I could be part of a team and firm that is growing – it was a big draw. I met several senior partners and felt I could get on with them – they were relaxed, but enthusiastic.
The accolades Shulmans have won are well deserved and reinforce their culture. Looking after their people is a priority and that’s borne out by the internal surveys that show a very high level of employee satisfaction.
