“I wanted responsibility and hands-on training, with the right level of support”
I had been fortunate to gain work experience in both large and small firms and my clear preference was to find a firm that could offer me responsibility and hands-on training, but also be of a size where I would be supported and supervised by experienced specialist lawyers. I also specifically targeted firms that could offer the breadth of commercial work I was looking for.
When researching Shulmans, I was impressed by their reputation on a national and regional level. The firm was mentioned in the Legal 500 and, as well as holding Lexcel and Investors in People accreditation, it had also won a number of other awards. The information found in the Training Contract and Pupillage Handbook also gave me the impression that this was a firm that took trainee recruitment very seriously. After attending the assessment day, I received a telephone call the next day saying that I was to be offered a Training Contract. I was fortunate to receive other offers, but I was impressed with the firm’s response time and accepted straightaway.
The firm offers a unique Internship Scheme which gave me the chance to experience four weeks’ paid work each summer before starting my Training Contract. This was particularly helpful in getting to know the firm and my future colleagues before I began my training with Shulmans. On joining, I was not disappointed and believe the firm punches well above its weight in terms of its client base.
